Marietta Alboni established her reputation as one of the most significant contraltos in operatic history during the nineteenth century. Born in 1826 in Città di Castello, she developed a voice noted for its seamless two-and-a-half-octave range, commanding international stages from Milan and London to the United States before retiring in 1872.
Musical Formation
Alboni began her training at the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna, where she studied under the composer Gioachino Rossini. Recognizing her potential, Rossini facilitated her early career by securing a contract to perform his Stabat Mater across Northern Italy, which provided the financial means for her continued musical education. His mentorship, which she valued throughout her life, proved instrumental in her professional trajectory.

Her professional debut occurred in 1842 in Bologna, followed by an engagement at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala that same year. By the mid-1840s, Alboni expanded her reach to Saint Petersburg and major cities across Central Europe. Settling in Paris, she maintained a rigorous touring schedule that included a prominent 1852–53 tour of the United States. During these years, she performed diverse roles in operas by composers including Donizetti, Pacini, and Verdi.
Retirement and Legacy
Following an initial retirement in 1863 due to her husband's illness, Alboni eventually returned to the stage to perform Rossini's Petite messe solennelle. She formally retired in 1872 after performances at the Paris Théâtre des Italiens. In her later years, she resided near Paris at Villa La Cenerentola, remaining active in charity work until her death in 1894. She is interred at Père Lachaise Cemetery.
