Mariel Zagunis

Mariel Zagunis became the first American to win an Olympic fencing gold medal in a century when she secured the title in the women's sabre event at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Her victory broke a long drought for the United States, as the country had not claimed a fencing gold since 1904.

Early Development and Breakthroughs

Born in 1985 in Portland, Oregon, Zagunis grew up in a family of athletes. Her parents, Robert and Cathy Zagunis, were both collegiate rowers who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. Raised in the Catholic faith with siblings who also pursued sabre fencing, she attended Valley Catholic School from kindergarten through 12th grade. She later studied anthropology at the University of Notre Dame on an athletic scholarship.

Olympic Dominance in Athens and Beijing

Zagunis entered the 2004 Athens Games as a replacement selection after Nigeria withdrew. Despite not qualifying directly, she navigated the tournament to defeat Xue Tan 15–9 in the final. Four years later, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she defended her individual sabre title by defeating teammate Sada Jacobson 15–8. During those same Games, she contributed to a historic American sweep of the podium in the individual event and earned a bronze medal in the team sabre competition alongside Jacobson and Rebecca Ward.

International Competition and Later Career

Her career extended well beyond her two individual Olympic golds. Over her career, she became a five-time Olympian, competing in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. At the 2012 London Games, she served as the United States flag bearer during the Parade of Nations. Her final Olympic appearance occurred in Tokyo in 2021, where she reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Sofya Velikaya.

Television Appearance

Outside of her athletic career, Zagunis participated in media projects. In 2017, she appeared on the Food Network program Chopped. Competing in the Star Power: Culinary Muscle episode against other athletes including Dorothy Hamill and LaMarr Woodley, she was the second contestant eliminated from the cooking challenge.
