Over 300 traditional songs were preserved through the collaborations of Marie Kraja and pianist Lola Gjoka. Born in Zadar in 1911, this opera singer moved to Shkodra at age six. Her formal musical education took place at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where she completed her training in 1934 before beginning a teaching career in Albania.
Early Career and Training
After graduating in 1934, Kraja taught at a secondary school in Shkodra and later at the Queen Mother Women's Institute in Tirana. During these early years in Tirana, she frequently appeared alongside pianist Tonin Guraziu. Her international presence grew through representations such as the Evening of Nations held in Vienna.

Kraja became known for her precise delivery of Albanian urban lyric songs, an approach shaped by her German musical training. This technical background allowed her to present traditional folk compositions with professional clarity. Alongside arranger Lola Gjoka, she produced a vast body of recorded work that remains available to this day.
International Performances
Her career included several notable recitals throughout Europe. In 1937, she performed in Bari, Italy. In June of the following year, she joined Tefta Tashko-Koço and Lola Gjoka for a fundraising concert intended to support the singing studies of baritone Kristo Koço in Milan. In 1939, she completed a recital in Florence before returning to Albania.
Post-War Contributions and Legacy
Following the Second World War, Kraja joined the faculty of the Jordan Misja Academy. She maintained a performance career alongside her teaching duties, notably appearing in the 1959 production of Mrika, the first Albanian opera, which featured music by Prenkë Jakova and a libretto by Llazar Siliqi. She held the People's Artist of Albania title and died in Tirana in 1999.
