Early Development and Education
Born in 1984 in Tokyo, Kondo began her exploration of domestic organization during childhood. She attended the Friends School and later pursued sociology at Tokyo Woman's Christian University. During her senior year, she completed a capstone thesis focused on the gendered perspectives of tidying. Her early life also included a five-year period serving as an attendant maiden at a Shinto shrine, an experience she later identified as foundational to her professional philosophy.

The core of Kondo's approach involves categorizing belongings rather than focusing on room-by-room cleaning. Practitioners gather all items in a category, such as books or clothing, and evaluate each piece based on whether it sparks joy. Inspired by Shinto principles regarding the divine spirit of objects, she advocates for discarding items that no longer serve a purpose, assigning a specific home to retained possessions, and honoring the utility of items.
Media Expansion
Kondo gained significant prominence in the United States and the United Kingdom following the 2019 release of the Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. The program earned her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host. In 2021, she returned to the platform with Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo. Beyond television, she opened an online retail store, KonMari, in 2019 to further distribute her organizational materials.
Personal Transition
Kondo married Kawahara Takumi in 2012. Takumi, formerly a sales-support and marketing employee in Osaka, transitioned into the role of CEO of Konmari-Media, LLC, to manage her career. The couple has three children and has resided in Tokyo, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Since expanding her family, Kondo has noted a shift toward more flexible domestic standards to better accommodate her evolving personal responsibilities.
