Fourteen stab wounds from an awl ended the life of an eleven-year-old agricultural worker in 1902. Maria Goretti, born in Corinaldo in 1890, spent her final years in the Kingdom of Italy as a domestic caretaker for her family. Her death followed a physical struggle with an assailant who demanded submission and later confessed to the assault.
Early Life and Migration
The third of seven children, Maria Goretti was born to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. Due to extreme poverty, the family vacated their farm in 1896, relocating to Colle Gianturco. By 1899, they settled at La Cascina Antica near Nettuno. Following her father's death from malaria, Maria assumed responsibility for household chores, childcare, and meal preparation while other family members performed manual labor in the fields.

On 5 July 1902, Alessandro Serenelli, who resided in the same house as the Goretti family, approached Maria while she was performing domestic duties. He threatened her with a ten-inch awl to coerce her into sexual activity. Maria resisted the assault, citing religious objections. During the struggle, Serenelli inflicted fourteen wounds on her body, affecting her heart, lungs, and diaphragm. She was transported to a hospital in Nettuno, where she died the following day.
Legal Proceedings and Penance
Alessandro Serenelli was arrested immediately. Because he was a minor at the time and the Italian Penal Code of 1889 had abolished capital punishment for standard offenses, he received a thirty-year sentence rather than the death penalty. After three years in isolation, he expressed remorse following a visit from Monsignor Giovanni Blandini. After serving twenty-seven years, Serenelli was released and sought forgiveness from Assunta Goretti, who granted it. He eventually lived as a Capuchin lay brother until his death in 1970.
Canonization
Maria Goretti attained official status within the Catholic Church decades after her death. She was beatified on 27 April 1947 in a ceremony attended by her mother and Pope Pius XII. On 24 June 1950, Pope Pius XII performed her canonization. Her life is commemorated by the Congregation of the Passion.
