Ascent at Pirelli
Marco Tronchetti Provera entered Pirelli & C. in 1986. One year later, he married Cecilia Pirelli, the daughter of the firm's leader, Leopoldo Pirelli. Following an unsuccessful attempt to merge with Continental, the German automotive components manufacturer, Leopoldo Pirelli resigned from his chief executive role in 1992. He appointed his son-in-law to assume the position of CEO.

In 2001, Provera secured a controlling interest in the primary holding company of Telecom Italia. He subsequently served as the chairman of the telecommunications operator from September 2001 until September 2006. During his tenure, he explored a potential sale of the business to Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecommunications figure. Beyond his primary corporate duties, he held positions at the La Scala opera house and served as chairman of Il Sole 24 Ore between 1996 and 2005.
ChemChina Acquisition and Current Standing
The year 2015 marked a shift in ownership for Pirelli & C. when Provera managed a 7-billion-dollar takeover by ChemChina. Through complex corporate structures, including Marco Polo Industrial Holding S.p.A. and Camfin S.p.A., he negotiated terms to retain an influential role within the tire manufacturing firm. He remained the CEO until May 2022, when he transitioned to the position of executive vice-chairman. He currently holds a controlling stake in his own holding firm, Marco Tronchetti and Provera & C. S.p.A.
Institutional Appointments
Provera maintains an extensive presence within Italian and international advisory organizations. His roles include deputy chairman of the Mediobanca board, membership on the executive committee of Confindustria, and participation in the International Advisory Board of Allianz. He is also affiliated with the Italian Aspen Institute, the Trilateral Commission, and the steering committees of Assonime and Assolombarda.
