A degree in mathematics from the University of Chicago provided the academic foundation for Marco Antonio Raupp, a Brazilian scholar who transitioned from theoretical research to high-level governance. His career spanned decades of institutional leadership, influencing scientific policy and space research across Brazil while maintaining his standing as a prominent mathematician in the national scientific community.
Academic and Research Foundations
Born in 1938 in Cachoeira do Sul, Raupp completed his initial education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He subsequently obtained his PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago. His professional trajectory involved teaching at the University of Brasília and the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of São Paulo. Additionally, he served as the lead researcher at the Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica, or LNCC.

Raupp held numerous administrative and scientific roles, including serving as Director of the National Institute for Space Research and President of the Brazilian Space Agency. He also directed the Parque Tecnológico de São José dos Campos. His leadership extended to professional organizations, where he served as President of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência and the Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática Aplicada e Computacional. He was also a member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
Government Tenure
On 24 January 2012, President Dilma Rousseff appointed Raupp to lead the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, replacing Aloizio Mercadante. He occupied this cabinet position until 17 March 2014, when he departed following ministerial reforms initiated by President Rousseff. For his work in science and administration, he received recognition as a Commander of the Order of Rio Branco and the National Order of Scientific Merit.
Final Years
On 10 July 2016, a severe traffic collision necessitated surgical intervention and a medically-induced coma for Raupp. He later died in São José dos Campos on 24 July 2021 at the age of 83. The cause of death was acute respiratory failure resulting from a brain tumor.
