Marcin Wasilewski

Polish footballer

Marcin Ryszard Wasilewski, a Kraków-born defender, navigated a career spanning over two decades, most notably securing the Football League Championship title with Leicester City. His professional trajectory encompassed stints across Poland, Belgium, and England, eventually transitioning into his current role as a football pundit after an extensive period as a centre-back in the professional game.

Early Development and Belgian Tenure

Born on 9 June 1980, Wasilewski began his senior career at Hutnik Kraków before moving through Śląsk Wrocław and Wisła Płock. He joined Amica Wronki in 2005, remaining with the organization until its merger with Lech Poznań. In January 2007, he moved to the Belgian Pro League, joining Anderlecht. During the 2008–09 campaign, he proved effective in the final third, tying as the club's third-highest scorer with eight goals.

The 2009 Injury and Resolution

On 30 August 2009, during a match against Standard Liège, Wasilewski sustained open fractures to both his tibia and fibula following a challenge by Axel Witsel. The incident resulted in an eight-match suspension for Witsel. Following corrective surgery and a long rehabilitation process, Wasilewski returned to the pitch on 8 May 2010, scoring the opening goal in a victory against S.V. Zulte Waregem. The pair eventually met again in a 2012 UEFA Champions League match, where Wasilewski opted to shake Witsel's hand to avoid personal conflict.

English League Success

Wasilewski joined Leicester City in September 2013 after a successful trial. He played a central role in the club's 2013–14 Championship-winning season, which secured their promotion to the Premier League. He made his Premier League debut in November 2014. On 31 January 2015, he recorded his first English football goal against Manchester United. Although he was part of the 2015–16 Premier League squad, he did not qualify for a winner's medal due to only making four league appearances, though he started in the final two matches of that campaign.

International Participation

His international career began on 20 November 2002 in a friendly match against Denmark in Copenhagen. Throughout his tenure representing Poland, he was selected for the national squads that participated in both UEFA Euro 2008 and UEFA Euro 2012.
