Rise to Prominence in Chile
Salas started his professional journey within the youth setup of Deportes Temuco before moving to Santiago to join Universidad de Chile in 1993. He debuted on 4 January 1994 against Cobreloa, scoring his first goal. His reputation grew rapidly after a hat-trick against Colo Colo. Fans nicknamed him Matador, a reference to his composed finishing and a song by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. In 1996, Salas transferred to the Argentine club River Plate. He made his mark quickly, scoring his first goal against Boca Juniors at the La Bombonera stadium in September 1996. During his tenure, he played 67 matches and recorded 31 goals, contributing to victories in the Torneo de Apertura 1996, Clausura 1997, Apertura 1997, and the 1997 Supercopa Libertadores. His performance in 1997 earned him the title of South American Footballer of the Year and Chilean Sportsman of the Year.
Italian Career and International Impact
In 1998, SS Lazio acquired Salas for US$20.5 million. He played a vital role in the team's resurgence, helping them win the Serie A title, a Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa Italiana trophies, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup. He also represented Chile in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, where he scored four goals in four matches. Over his international career, he scored 37 goals for the Chile national team and 8 goals for the Chile Olympic team.
Post-Playing Career
Following his retirement from professional play, Salas remained involved in the sport. He became the president of the Chilean club Deportes Temuco in May 2013, following the club's absorption of Unión Temuco, which he had owned between 2008 and April 2013. The club currently competes in the Primera B, the second division of Chilean football.
