On 19 June 2015, authorities arrested Odebrecht during Operation Car Wash, a wide-ranging investigation into systemic corruption involving the state-owned oil company Petrobras. The legal proceedings resulted in a conviction on 8 March 2016 for the payment of over $30 million in bribes, leading to an initial 19-year prison sentence. By December 2016, his term was reduced to ten years following his decision to admit guilt, provide evidence to authorities, and pay a fine. In November 2017, documents known as the Paradise Papers identified him, his father, and his brother in connection with offshore investments used to facilitate payments during the scandal. He moved to house arrest in December 2017 as part of a leniency agreement involving a $2 billion fine.
Sentencing Adjustments
The legal status of Marcelo Odebrecht remained subject to judicial review following his initial sentencing. In April 2022, Minister Edson Fachin granted a further reduction of his sentence, shortening the term from ten years to 7.5 years. This adjustment effectively concluded the custodial requirements for his involvement in the corruption scandal, clearing the way for the removal of legal restrictions by the end of 2022.
