Medical Training and Early Career
After graduating from Cairo University in 1957, Yacoub completed two years of medical residency. Seeking further experience, he moved to Britain to work under Sir Russell Brock at Guy's Hospital. His early professional path took him to the University of Chicago, where he held an assistant professor role before establishing his primary clinical base at Harefield Hospital in 1973.

Yacoub contributed significantly to cardiothoracic surgery through his collaboration with Donald Ross on valve disease. He developed the Ross-Yacoub procedure, which involves remodelling the autograft root to replace diseased aortic valves. Furthermore, he devised a two-stage approach for the arterial switch operation to treat transposition of the great arteries in older patients.
Transplant Program Development
In 1980, Yacoub inaugurated the heart transplant unit at Harefield Hospital, beginning with the successful operation on Derrick Morris. He continued to lead advancements in the field, completing the first combined heart and lung transplant in the region in 1983.
Philanthropy and Global Impact
Following his retirement from the National Health Service in 2001, Yacoub maintained his involvement in paediatric surgery through the Chain of Hope charity. He later co-founded the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation in 2008 to support the Aswan Heart Project. His career has been recognized with numerous honours, including the Order of Merit and the Lister Medal.
