The Shanshui City Philosophy

Central to his design approach is the concept of Shanshui City, a philosophy that seeks to counter the proliferation of soulless urban developments. Inspired by the ideas of scientist Qian Xuesen, Ma views his designs as a synthesis of city density, functional requirements, and the artistic spirit of natural landscapes. He rejects the notion of buildings as mere consumer products, favoring structures that evoke emotional responses and possess cultural depth.

Notable Works and Global Recognition

Ma’s portfolio includes diverse projects such as the Ordos Museum in China, the Harbin Opera House, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. His designs have earned numerous accolades, including the 2012 CTBUH Best Tall Buildings Americas award for the Absolute Towers. In 2025, he was named to the TIME100 list of influential people.
