M. Visvesvaraya

Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore (1861-1962)

Born in 1861 at Muddenahalli, M. Visvesvaraya served as the 19th Dewan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. A civil engineer and statesman, he significantly influenced the infrastructure of British India and the Kingdom of Mysore, eventually receiving the Bharat Ratna in 1955 for his contributions to the technological and industrial development of the nation.

Engineering and Irrigation Innovation

Visvesvaraya entered the Public Works Department in the Bombay Presidency as an assistant engineer in 1885. In 1903, he implemented a patented system of automatic weir floodgates at the Khadakvasla Dam near Pune. This technology successfully increased reservoir storage capacity. His expertise in water management extended to the design of drainage systems for Aden in 1906 and later to flood protection measures for the Musi river in Hyderabad.

Dewan of Mysore

Appointed Dewan by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV in 1912, Visvesvaraya oversaw the industrialization of the Kingdom of Mysore. His administration facilitated the establishment of the Mysore Soap Factory, the Mysore Iron & Steel Works in Bhadravathi, and the State Bank of Mysore. He also prioritized education and infrastructure by founding the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1917 and commissioning new railway lines across the region.

Academic and Professional Legacy

Before his administrative career, Visvesvaraya earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Madras and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune. His professional life spanned over a century, concluding with his death in 1962 at the age of 101. His legacy is officially observed in India, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania on 15 September, his birthday, which is recognized as Engineer's Day.
