By the early 2010s, the enterprise had expanded its operations to become the largest residential solar installer in the United States. Following the 2016 acquisition of SolarCity by Tesla, Inc., Rive continued with the organization until 2017, when he announced his departure to pursue new startup activities.

Rive's professional impact was acknowledged by industry groups throughout his career. In 2010, the MIT Technology Review listed him as one of the top 35 innovators globally under age 35. In 2013, he received an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Northern California region, and the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal named him and his brother Executive of the Year in 2008. His move to the United States was facilitated by his involvement in underwater hockey, a sport he played at age 14 in South Africa, which eventually led him to San Jose, California.
