Securing 50.79 percent of the vote in the second round of the 2019 general election, Luis Lacalle Pou became the 42nd president of Uruguay. His victory at age 46 ended fifteen years of continuous leftist governance, marking the first time a member of the National Party had held the presidency since his father left office in 1995.
Early Development and Legal Studies
Born in Montevideo on 11 August 1973, he is the son of former president Luis Alberto Lacalle and former senator Julia Pou. During his teenage years, a medical consultation in the United States identified a growth hormone deficiency, leading to a treatment regimen that brought his adult height to 1.70 meters. He attended The British Schools of Montevideo before enrolling at the Catholic University of Uruguay in 1993. He completed his law degree in 1998.

His parliamentary career began in 2000 following his election as a representative for the Canelones Department. He served in the Chamber of Representatives until 2015, including a term as president of the chamber during the 2011–2012 legislative session. He transitioned to the Senate in 2015, where he served until 2020. During these years, he maintained his involvement in the National Party, specifically aligning with the Herrerist faction, which traces its history to his great-grandfather, Luis Alberto de Herrera.
Presidency and Policy Reforms
Following his 2020 inauguration, the administration introduced the Urgent Consideration Law, a comprehensive bill enacted on 8 July 2020 that restructured several areas of government. His term included significant reforms to the national education system and retirement pension laws. He also managed the national health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in high approval ratings. In 2022, he received the National Order of Merit. His term faced challenges, including a 2023 drought that limited water access in the Montevideo metropolitan area and internal administrative controversies.
