A pig farm established at age nineteen provided the initial foundation for Luigi Cremonini, who emerged from a rural background in Savignano sul Panaro to construct a multinational food empire. Born in 1939 into a farming family, he leveraged small-scale livestock operations into the Cremonini Group, a massive commercial enterprise with interests spanning meat production, catering, and food distribution.
Founding the Cremonini Group
The operational core of the organization began in 1963 when Cremonini opened a butcher shop alongside his brother, Giuseppe. By 1966, he founded Inalca, a firm dedicated specifically to industrial-scale butchery. Throughout the 1970s, the enterprise expanded by incorporating multiple subsidiary companies, evolving into the Cremonini Group. The business eventually grew to include Marr, which functions as the largest food-service distributor in Italy, and the group reports an annual turnover of $3.6 billion.

Cremonini entered the catering market in the 1980s by establishing the brand Burghy. He sold this chain to McDonald’s in 1996, securing a significant supply agreement for Inalca to provide beef to the American corporation. In 1991, he acquired the Montana canned meat brand and later launched the Roadhouse Grill restaurant chain in 2001. His railway catering operations, managed through subsidiaries Agape and Chef Express, now provide services on high-speed lines across eight countries. Furthermore, he expanded into Russia, opening a Moscow plant in 2010 focused on distributing Italian products and manufacturing hamburger patties for McDonald's.
Distinctions and Cultural Contributions
Recognition for his industrial activities arrived through several state honors. In 1985, he received the Order of Merit for Labour and was appointed a Cavalier of Labour by President Alessandro Pertini. Additionally, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands awarded him the Order of Orange-Nassau. In 1994, the University of Bologna conferred an honorary degree upon him, and he later received the Italy in the World award in Moscow during 2009. Beyond commerce, he funded the archaeological excavations and museum development for the Cremonini Space at the Trevi in Rome, which opened in 2009.
