Early Development and Television Beginnings
Raised in a family of six children in New Zealand, Lawless attended Marist College and studied languages at Auckland University. In 1994, Lawless appeared in the television pilot Hercules and the Amazon Women. This led to her casting as the character Xena in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, starting in March 1995. The role, originally intended for Vanessa Angel, required Lawless to dye her hair black. Xena: Warrior Princess launched as a spin-off in September 1995 and ran for six seasons. During production in 1996, Lawless sustained a fractured pelvis while riding a horse, necessitating narrative adjustments for the second season.
Diversified Screen and Stage Roles
Beyond her most notable television role, Lawless appeared on Broadway as Betty Rizzo in the 1997 Grease revival. Her television career included playing D'Anna Biers in Battlestar Galactica and Lucretia in the Spartacus franchise, the latter earning her a 2011 Saturn Award. She also held recurring parts in Parks and Recreation, Salem, and Ash vs Evil Dead. Since 2019, she has starred in My Life Is Murder.
