Winning the ninth season of the RTL talent competition Deutschland sucht den Superstar in 2012 propelled Luca Hänni to immediate prominence. As the youngest winner in the program’s history and its first non-German victor, he secured a recording contract with Universal Music Group, launching a career that transitioned from competition pop into electronic and R&B styles.
Early Career and Competition Success
Born in 1994 in Bern, Switzerland, Hänni developed early musical interests, learning drums in kindergarten before teaching himself piano and guitar. He began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer but abandoned the training in 2012 to pursue music full-time. His DSDS victory featured the single Don’t Think About Me, which hit number one in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, achieving gold status in Switzerland within four days of release. His debut album, My Name Is Luca, reached the top of the charts in Austria and Switzerland.

Following his initial success with Universal, Hänni moved toward independent management through his own label, Luca Music. He collaborated with DJ Christopher S on the 2014 album Dance Until We Die. He subsequently pivoted toward R&B and electronic sounds during recording sessions in Los Angeles, releasing When We Wake Up in 2015. Beyond music, his television presence grew through wins on Kampf der Orchester in 2014 and Dance Dance Dance in 2017.
International Recognition and Later Work
Hänni represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019. His entry, She Got Me, secured a fourth-place finish. Throughout his career, he has engaged in various commercial and charitable activities, including modeling for the Migros underwear brand Nick Tyler and supporting the blood cancer charity DKMS. He also participated in the collaborative charity single Ensemble in 2014.
