Political Leadership and the Red River
Riel emerged as a voice for the Métis people during a period of significant regional instability. Following his return to the Red River Colony, he became involved in local governance and resistance against federal authorities. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia in 1870, where he focused on the political terms governing the integration of the territory into the broader Canadian framework.

Despite political opposition, Riel secured election to the House of Commons of Canada on three separate occasions between 1873 and 1875. He officially held his seat during the 1873-1874 and 1874-1875 periods. However, due to security concerns regarding his role in past resistance movements, he never physically occupied his office in Ottawa, spending much of this time in exile.
Trial and Execution
After leading the 1885 North-West Rebellion, Riel faced military defeat at the Battle of Batoche. He was subsequently captured and transported to Regina. The Canadian judicial system convicted him of high treason, resulting in his execution by hanging in November 1885. He was buried at the Saint Boniface Cathedral following his death at the age of 41.
