Louis-Philippe I

King of the French from 1830 to 1848 (1773-1850)

Louis-Philippe I ascended to the throne as King of the French in 1830, marking the beginning of the July Monarchy. His tenure, which lasted until 1848, established him as the only French monarch descending from the Orléans branch of the Bourbon family and the final individual to hold the title of King within the country.

Early Life and Military Service

Born in Paris in 1773 to the Duke of Orléans and Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon, Louis-Philippe spent his formative years under the tutelage of the Countess of Genlis. During the French Revolutionary Wars, he served with distinction as an officer in the Army of the North. By age 19, he held the rank of lieutenant general, having participated in engagements such as the Battle of Valmy in 1792.

Exile and Return

Following his association with a plot to restore the monarchy, Louis-Philippe fled Switzerland in 1793. His departure occurred during the Reign of Terror, a period during which his father was executed. He remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration allowed his eventual return to France, setting the stage for his later political ascent.

The July Monarchy

After the 1830 July Revolution forced the abdication of Charles X, Louis-Philippe was proclaimed king. His reign focused on conservative policies influenced by François Guizot, promoting colonial expansion in Algeria and maintaining relations with the United Kingdom. Bankers and industrialists dominated the period, yet economic deterioration by 1847 undermined his stability.

Abdication and Final Years

The French Revolution of 1848 triggered his abdication, signaling the end of his rule and the start of the French Second Republic. He spent the remainder of his life in exile in the United Kingdom. He died in 1850 at Claremont and was interred at the Dreux Royal Chapel.
