Early Training and Education
Louis-Michel van Loo began his formal education under the guidance of his father, the painter Jean-Baptiste van Loo, in Turin and Rome. These formative years were punctuated by his success at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. Following his 1725 prize, he spent time as a resident at the Villa Medici between 1725 and 1731, later traveling to Rome with his uncle, the painter Charles-André van Loo, from 1727 to 1732.

In 1736, he moved to Madrid to serve as court painter to Philip V of Spain. His tenure in Spain saw the production of his notable work, The Family of Philip V. His influence in the region extended beyond painting; in 1752, he participated as a founder-member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
Return to Paris and Academic Leadership
Upon returning to Paris in 1753, he shifted his focus toward portraits of Louis XV. His administrative responsibilities increased in 1765 when he succeeded Charles-André as director of the École Royale des Élèves Protégés, a special school within the French academy. During this final period of his career, he executed the 1766 portrait of the Portuguese statesman Sebastião de Melo, Marquis of Pombal.
