Her debut in the 1939 film Hotel for Women positioned her as a breakout talent, despite the studio intentionally inflating her age to 19 to suit marketing strategies. She frequently collaborated with Tyrone Power, notably appearing in the 1940 production The Mark of Zorro. During the 1940s, she maintained a rigorous schedule, earning critical notice for her performances in Summer Storm in 1944 and Hangover Square in 1945.

Her commercial apex arrived with the 1947 release of Forever Amber, which became the most successful film for Fox that year. Throughout the decade, she solidified her range with roles in diverse features including Fallen Angel, Unfaithfully Yours, A Letter to Three Wives, and the 1950 film No Way Out. These projects confirmed her status as a versatile performer capable of navigating both lead and supporting character dynamics within the high-budget studio system.
