Holding the position of Governor of the Bank of Botswana from 1999 to 2016, Linah Mohohlo served as the first woman to lead the country's central bank. Her career spanned over two decades at the institution, where she navigated policy and financial markets before influencing economic frameworks at both the national and international levels until her death in 2021.
Academic Foundation
Born in 1952 in Ramotswa, Mohohlo pursued a diverse international education to prepare for her career in finance. She earned a diploma in accounting and business from the University of Botswana. Her studies continued abroad, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in economics at George Washington University and a master's degree in finance and investment from the University of Exeter. Furthermore, she completed an executive management program at Yale University.

Before her appointment as Governor, Mohohlo spent 23 years at the Bank of Botswana, working through various divisions including the Board Secretariat, human resources, and financial markets research. During her tenure as Governor, she represented Botswana at the International Monetary Fund and served on the International Monetary and Financial Committee between 2000 and 2002. Her expertise in monetary policy and governance led to her authorship of numerous academic papers and official policy statements regarding liquidity and economic integration.
Global Commitments and Advisory Roles
Beyond domestic banking, Mohohlo participated in multiple international initiatives. Kofi Annan appointed her as an Eminent Person in 2002 to oversee evaluations of United Nations development agendas for Africa. She joined the Commission for Africa under Tony Blair and contributed to the Africa Progress Panel to advocate for sustainable development. Her later work included serving on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Committee on Financial Services for the poor and the World Health Organization's Council on the Economics of Health For All.
Final Years
In 2017, Mohohlo transitioned into corporate governance, joining the board of Tlou Energy Limited as a non-executive director. Concurrent with her private sector activity, she served as the Chancellor of the University of Botswana from 2017 until her death. Mohohlo passed away in Gaborone on 2 June 2021 due to complications from COVID-19.
