Professional Trajectory
Born in 1940 in Lansing, Michigan, Woods attended Shortridge High School before pursuing studies at the University of Illinois and Purdue University. Although he practiced as a designer, he never earned a degree in architecture nor held a professional license. Early in his career, he served as a field representative for Eero Saarinen on the Ford Foundation building in New York City. He also held a position at the firm Richardson, Severns Scheeler & Associates in Champaign, Illinois, and produced paintings for the Indianapolis Art Museum.

By 1976, Woods shifted his professional focus exclusively toward theoretical and experimental projects. He argued that the essence of architecture transcended the mere creation of physical form. His body of work often addressed environments in crisis, including specific conceptual proposals for Sarajevo, Havana, and San Francisco following the Loma Prieta earthquake. These designs were later compiled in his 1997 publication, Radical Reconstruction.
Academic Contributions and Legacy
As an educator, Woods taught at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York City and the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Beyond his architectural explorations, he worked as a graphic artist, illustrating Arthur C. Clarke’s anthology, The Sentinel, and Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Niebelung. Following his death in 2012, his work, including intricate drawings and design proposals, was featured in a 2013 touring exhibition organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
