Latif Karimov

Azerbaijani artist and art historian (1906–1991)

Latif Karimov is remembered for work the next generation could not ignore.

The record lists Latif Karimov as Azerbaijani artist and art historian (1906–1991).

Latif Karimov was born at Shusha in 1906. His recorded nationality is Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Around the turn of the twentieth century the movements arrived in quick succession, each defining itself against the last.

He worked as art historian, rug maker and visual artist.

A painting outlives the argument about it, which is the only durable form of an artistic reputation.

Recognition followed: Order of Friendship of Peoples, Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the Badge of Honour and Medal "For the Defence of the Caucasus".

That the work was made in Azerbaijan Democratic Republic shaped it: artistic traditions, academies and the galleries that decide what is seen have never been evenly distributed.

Latif Karimov died in 1991, aged 85. The work remains, hanging in collections that outlived both the artist and the market that first priced it.
