László Rajk Jr.

Hungarian architect (1949-2019)

The Samizdat Boutique operated from a private apartment in Budapest during the 1980s, serving as a clandestine bookstore run by László Rajk Jr. This venture represented only one facet of a career that spanned avant-garde architecture, political activism, and film production design, reflecting a life defined by consistent opposition to restrictive state systems in Hungary.

Architectural Training and Avant-Garde Beginnings

László Rajk Jr. completed his formal education at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics between 1967 and 1972. He later attended McGill University from 1975 to 1976. As an architect, he became an active member of the Hungarian avant-garde movement. His professional trajectory faced significant state-imposed obstacles by 1980, when he was blacklisted and prohibited from practicing under his own name due to his involvement with the Democratic Opposition.
