Aftonbladet emerged in 1830 under the direction of Lars Johan Hierta, functioning as a primary vehicle for liberal opposition against the conservative governance of King Charles XIV John. This publication served as the foundation for his reputation as a political agitator, securing his role in shaping the Swedish landscape through both media influence and industrial enterprise.
Early Career and Legislative Service
Born in 1801 within the Uppsala Cathedral Assembly, Hierta entered Uppsala University in 1814. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy and a Candidate of Law by 1821. His professional life began at the Bergskollegium, transitioning from an unpaid trainee to a law clerk by 1825. His parliamentary involvement spanned from 1828 until 1866 as a member of the Riksdag of the Estates, followed by service in the Second Chamber from 1867 to 1872.

Take the IQ test →Media and Publishing Influence
Hierta began his writing career contributing to Conservationsbladet in 1823, followed by work for Argus and Stockholmsposten. In 1829, he established Hiertas bokförlag. His most significant media venture, Aftonbladet, faced frequent bans due to its political stance, forcing Hierta to publish under alternative names. He expanded the scope of professional journalism by employing Wendela Hebbe, the first woman hired as a permanent newspaper staff member in Sweden.
Industrial Expansion
Beyond his political and journalistic pursuits, Hierta functioned as a wholesaler and industrialist. In 1839, he founded Liljeholmens Stearinfabriks AB, a candle factory that maintains operations to this day. By the time of his death in 1872 within the Klara Church Parish, his diverse commercial activities had established him as one of the wealthiest individuals in the country.
Philanthropic Legacy
Upon his death, his widow, Wilhelmina Fröding, managed his estate and directed significant capital toward public welfare. She donated 100,000 SEK to Stockholm University to endow a professorship in economics. Additionally, she provided 400,000 SEK to establish the Lars Hiertas minne foundation, designed to support independent work focused on human progress.
