His work on the film Mephisto contributed to its recognition as the Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film. After establishing his reputation in Europe, Koltai joined the American Society of Cinematographers and transitioned into the United States film market. During this period, he contributed to numerous productions, including White Palace, Wrestling Ernest Hemingway, Born Yesterday, When a Man Loves a Woman, Just Cause, Home for the Holidays, and Out to Sea. A key artistic partnership occurred with director Giuseppe Tornatore, beginning with the film The Legend of 1900. This collaboration culminated in his Academy Award nomination for Malèna.
Directorial Pursuits
Koltai transitioned into film direction with the 2005 Holocaust drama Fateless, based on the novel by Imre Kertész. The film premiered at several global events, including the Berlinale, where it was nominated for a Golden Berlin Bear. He later directed the 2007 film Evening, starring Claire Danes, Toni Collette, Vanessa Redgrave, and Meryl Streep. In 2023, he released the biopic Semmelweis, which Hungary selected for recommendation in the International Feature Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards.
