November 1982 marked the birth of Lai Ka-ying in British Hong Kong. As a researcher, engineer, and former superintendent within the Hong Kong Police Force, she achieved a significant milestone in space exploration by becoming the first astronaut from Hong Kong and the first female payload specialist within the People's Republic of China’s space program.
Academic Background
Lai attended Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College before enrolling at the University of Hong Kong. She completed a Bachelor of Science in computer science and information systems in 2004. Between 2004 and 2006, she pursued a Master of Philosophy, eventually earning a doctorate in 2011. Her advanced studies focused specifically on the field of computer forensics.

Before transitioning to space exploration, Lai served in the Technical Services Division of the Hong Kong Police Force. During her tenure, she attained the rank of superintendent. In May 2024, public reports identified her as a police officer with a doctorate in computer science who had been selected as a payload specialist in the fourth group of Chinese astronauts. This selection process required her to be seconded to the Security Bureau and subsequently relocated to Beijing for specialized astronaut training.
Shenzhou 23 Mission
In 2026, Lai received an assignment to the Shenzhou 23 mission, which targeted the Tiangong space station. Serving as the mission's payload specialist, she launched on 24 May 2026. This flight established her status as the fourth Chinese woman to travel into space and the first member of China's fourth astronaut selection group to complete a spaceflight mission.
