In 2006, Katsouranis moved to the Portuguese Liga, signing a four-year contract with Benfica for a reported €2.3 million. Reunited with coach Fernando Santos, he quickly adapted to the squad, scoring in his initial Clássico against Porto. His impact was significant, contributing six goals in 29 league matches during the 2006–07 season. His commitment was reaffirmed in 2007 with a contract extension, and he later served as team captain, eventually being named Benfica Player of the Year in 2009.
Return to Panathinaikos
Katsouranis returned to Greece in July 2009 to join Panathinaikos, a club he supported during his youth, for a fee of €3.5 million. He played a pivotal role in the 2009–10 campaign, helping the team secure a domestic double, which included winning the Greek Cup final against Aris Thessaloniki. He was instrumental in that league triumph, finishing as the team's second-highest scorer with eight goals.
