Literary Contributions

Awoonor's writing frequently incorporated Ewe dirges and religious symbolism to address the realities of decolonization. His debut collection, Rediscovery, was published in 1964. He continued to publish poetry and novels throughout his career, most notably the 1971 work This Earth, My Brother, which blended poetic structure with prose. He also contributed significantly to literary criticism, producing The Breast of the Earth in 1975 to survey the cultural history of sub-Saharan Africa.

Political and Diplomatic Service

Beyond his literary output, Awoonor engaged heavily in Ghanaian governance and international diplomacy. He served as the ambassador to Brazil and Cuba before being appointed the Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, where he chaired the committee against apartheid from 1990 to 1994. Later, he served as the Chairman of the Council of State for Ghana between 2009 and early 2013.

Imprisonment and Final Years

In 1975, Awoonor returned to Ghana to lead the English department at the University of Cape Coast. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested for allegedly assisting a soldier in an attempted coup and remained imprisoned without trial until 1976.
