Professional Formation
Born in Copenhagen in 1862, Knud Arne Petersen was the son of the draughtsman and art archaeologist Julius Magnus Petersen. His formal architectural training took place at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1878 and 1885. Following his graduation, he gained practical experience serving as an assistant to his uncle, Vilhelm Petersen, and to the architect Martin Nyrop.

Petersen maintained a long-term professional relationship with Industriforeningen, acting as its resident architect until 1927. His contributions to the Nordic Exhibition of 1888 marked an early milestone in his administrative and design career. Consequently, he represented the Kingdom of Denmark on exhibition committees for global events, notably the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, earning multiple medals for his contributions.
Tivoli Gardens and Architectural Legacy
Appointed artistic director of Tivoli Gardens in 1899, Petersen held this position until 1940. He introduced the Chinese Tower in 1900 and the Tivoli Concert Hall in 1902. His work at the park, particularly the 1909 Nimb complex, utilized inspiration from Moorish architecture. Outside of the park, his portfolio included the residential building Ny Christiansborg on the Copenhagen waterfront and the Klampenborg Racecourse.
