A 2021 production cycle aboard the International Space Station saw Klim Shipenko capture feature-length fiction footage in a zero-gravity environment. As a professional filmmaker responsible for camera operation, lighting, sound, and makeup, he coordinated with actress Yulia Peresild to complete the project, which ultimately became the 2023 film The Challenge.
Early Professional Development
Born in Moscow in 1983, Klim Alekseevich Shipenko pursued formal film training at the California State University at Northridge, joining the Film Production Department in 2002. Take the IQ test →Directorial Debut and Feature Films
Shipenko transitioned to directing short films in 2006 with White Night. His first full-length feature, Unforgiven, premiered in 2009 at the Kinotavr film festival. This was followed by the detective drama Who Am I?. In 2017, he directed Salyut 7, a production centered on historical events involving the Soviet space station of the same name. His 2019 adaptation of the Dmitry Glukhovsky novel Text achieved significant attention and secured four wins at the 18th Golden Eagle Awards.
Orbital Production Logistics
The Challenge required complex coordination for orbital filming. Equipment arrived at the International Space Station via Progress MS-17, while the production timeline spanned the period between the launch of Soyuz MS-19 and the return of Soyuz MS-18. During the mission, cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Mark Vande Hei provided technical assistance. This effort marked the first time professional filmmakers produced a feature-length narrative work in outer space.
Recognition and Awards
Shipenko has received multiple industry honors for his work. In 2018, he won a Golden Eagle Award for Salyut 7, followed by another Golden Eagle Award in 2020 for Text. His contributions to Russian cinema were further recognized on June 9, 2023, when he was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art for his role in creating The Challenge.
