A jarlig issued by Güyük Khan in 1248 identified Kilij Arslan IV as the rightful Sultan of Rûm, initiating a period of complex dynastic contention within the Seljuk Empire. Born in 1230, his political life involved multiple shifts in power and persistent instability regarding his position against his elder brother, Kaykaus II, spanning nearly two decades of medieval governance.
Succession and Rivalry
The initial mandate from Güyük Khan became ineffective upon the ruler's death in 1248. Following this, the internal politics of the Seljuk Empire devolved into a struggle between Kilij Arslan IV and his brother, Kaykaus II. Supporters of the former assassinated Shams al-Din Isfahani, who served as a key ally to Kaykaus II. The ensuing competition for the throne created a persistent power vacuum as both factions vied for control.

Kaykaus II established a temporary advantage in 1257 with external support from the Empire of Nicaea. However, the regional power dynamics shifted significantly when the Ilkhanate backed Kilij Arslan IV. This military support allowed him to overcome his brother by 1262, consolidating his claim to the sultanate during his final period of rule from 1257 to 1266.
The Final Years and Execution
During the 1260s, Mu'in al-Din Parwana sought to strengthen his own political standing by redistributing Seljuk crown lands to his associates. Kilij Arslan IV voiced formal protests against this appropriation of state territory. This opposition culminated in 1265 when Parwana ordered the execution of the sultan. Kilij Arslan IV died that year at the age of 35 and was buried within the Konya Province.
