Early Development and Academic Background
Born on March 27, 1962, in Racine, Wisconsin, Anderson developed an early interest in writing. He produced his first story, Injection, at age eight, and purchased his first typewriter at ten. His formal education included a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earned in 1981, followed by an MFA in Fiction from Lindenwood University in 2017. Before focusing full-time on writing, he spent 12 years working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Anderson became a prolific contributor to major media franchises. His Star Wars work includes the Jedi Academy trilogy, Darksaber, and the Young Jedi Knights series co-authored with Rebecca Moesta. He also wrote multiple novels for The X-Files, including Ground Zero and Ruins. His superhero fiction includes Enemies & Allies, focusing on Batman and Superman, and The Last Days of Krypton. Additionally, he collaborated with Neil Peart to novelize the Rush album Clockwork Angels and its sequel, Clockwork Lives.
Collaboration with the Herbert Estate
In 1997, Anderson entered a partnership with Brian Herbert to write prequels and sequels to the Dune series created by Frank Herbert. This collaboration includes the Dune prequel trilogy, initiated by Dune: House Atreides in 1999, as well as Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, which conclude the original Frank Herbert series. The partnership expanded to include the Hellhole trilogy.
Original Fiction and WordFire Press
Beyond franchises, Anderson authored The Saga of Seven Suns, a seven-novel space opera, and The Saga of Shadows. In 2011, he and Moesta established WordFire Press to reissue out-of-print titles. The imprint has published works by Frank Herbert and Allen Drury, including Advise and Consent and various unpublished manuscripts by Frank Herbert.
