By 1989, he secured leadership of the New National Party (NNP), a role he maintained for 35 years until 2024. His tenure as Prime Minister spanned two distinct periods: 1995 to 2008 and 2013 to 2022. During his time in office, he served as Minister of Finance during three separate intervals and was appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom.

Beyond his political duties, Mitchell maintained a long-standing involvement with cricket. He served as a spin bowler and held the captaincy of the Grenada team in 1973, eventually transitioning into a prominent administrative role within the sport.
