Keiko Fujimori

67th President of Peru

Keiko Fujimori assumed the presidency of Peru in 2026, marking the culmination of a political trajectory spanning over three decades. As the eldest daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, she emerged from the role of First Lady to become the central figure of Fujimorism, eventually securing the nation’s highest office after three previous unsuccessful electoral attempts.

Early Life and Education

Born in Lima in 1975, Keiko Fujimori attended the Colegio Sagrados Corazones Recoleta. In 1993, she relocated to the United States, studying at Stony Brook University before completing her education at Boston University in 1997. She later earned a degree from Columbia Business School between 2004 and 2008. These years in academia coincided with her father’s decade-long tenure as president, during which his government was marked by significant controversy.

The First Lady Years

In 1994, at age 19, Fujimori became the First Lady of Peru following the separation of her parents, Alberto Fujimori and Susana Higuchi. She maintained this role until 2000, heading the Foundation for the Children of Peru. During her tenure, she navigated public family disputes and allegations surrounding the administration. Following her father's resignation and flight to Japan in 2000, she transitioned out of the Government Palace.

Congressional Tenure and Presidential Bids

Fujimori entered electoral politics in 2006, winning a seat in the Congress of the Republic of Peru. By 2009, she assumed leadership of the Popular Force party. Between 2011 and 2021, she pursued the presidency three times, losing narrow runoffs against Ollanta Humala, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, and Pedro Castillo. Throughout this period, she faced legal challenges, including a corruption investigation related to the Odebrecht scandal, though she was never convicted.

Accession to the Presidency

In 2026, Fujimori achieved victory in her fourth presidential bid, defeating Roberto Sánchez in the runoff election. This result made her the second woman to hold the presidency of Peru, following Dina Boluarte, and the first to reach the office through direct election. Her administration represents the current chapter of a political career deeply rooted in the Fujimorist movement.
