The 230th selection in the 1998 NHL entry draft, Kārlis Skrastiņš, established a durable presence as a professional ice hockey defenceman. Over a career spanning twelve seasons in the National Hockey League, the Riga native represented the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, and Dallas Stars before transitioning to the Kontinental Hockey League for his final year.
NHL Development and Playing Streak
Selected by the Nashville Predators in the ninth round of the 1998 draft, Skrastiņš debuted as a reliable blueliner. His technical approach to the position culminated in the moniker Ironman. On February 8, 2007, while playing for the Colorado Avalanche, he surpassed Tim Horton to record the longest consecutive playing streak for a defenceman in NHL history. This run reached 495 games, concluding only after a knee injury forced him to miss a contest against the Anaheim Ducks on February 25, 2007. Prior to this, his durability was interrupted only once by a shoulder injury sustained in 2000.

After five seasons in Nashville, Skrastiņš moved to the Colorado Avalanche in 2003. He was later traded to the Florida Panthers on February 26, 2008, in exchange for Ruslan Salei. During the 2008–09 season, his first full term with the Panthers, he recorded a career-high 18 points. His 600th NHL appearance occurred on October 16, 2008, against the Minnesota Wild, and he secured his 100th career point on November 1, 2008, during a game against the Predators. In July 2009, he joined the Dallas Stars on a two-year, $2.75 million contract, where he played until the conclusion of the 2010–11 season.
International Competition and Final Season
Skrastiņš represented Latvia on the global stage, competing in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 Winter Olympics. In May 2011, he departed the NHL to sign with the Russian club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League. The team was scheduled to begin their season in Minsk. However, on September 7, 2011, the Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft carrying the roster crashed outside Tunoshna, Russia. Skrastiņš was among those killed in the accident, which claimed nearly the entire Lokomotiv organization. He was later interred at the Forest Cemetery.
