Early Pursuits and Wartime
Born in Vienna in 1917, Wlaschek studied chemistry at TU Wien until 1938. His academic progression halted when he was conscripted to serve in military campaigns across France and the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Following the conflict, he transitioned into the entertainment sector, working as a bandleader and bar pianist under the stage name Charly Walker while attempting to accumulate capital to open a dance cafe.

In 1953, he launched a perfumery in the Margareten district of Vienna, focusing on providing branded items at discount prices. The venture, known as Warenhandel Karl Wlaschek, expanded rapidly to 45 locations by 1960. He adapted this business model for groceries, implementing a self-service system in 1961 under the name BILLA, an abbreviation for Billiger Laden or 'Cheap Shop'. By the 1990s, the brand operated as Eurobilla in international markets.
Real Estate Diversification
After an unsuccessful attempt to participate in the privatization of Creditanstalt, then the second-largest bank in Austria, Wlaschek shifted his financial strategy toward real estate. He acquired significant historic and modern properties throughout Vienna. His portfolio included eight city-center palaces—such as the Palais Kinsky, Palais Ferstel, and Palais Harrach—alongside major commercial structures like the Andromeda Tower, the Ares Tower in Donau City, and the former Vienna Stock Exchange building.
Wealth and Recognition
By 2015, Forbes estimated his total fortune at 4.2 billion USD. Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, including the Grand Officer of the Order of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Great Golden Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the State of Vienna, and an Order of Honour from Salzburg. He died in Graz in 2015 and was buried at the Palais Kinsky.
