Karl Wien: The Physicist's Son Who Mapped Glaciers

On the night of 14 June 1937, sixteen men were asleep in tents at Camp 4 on Nanga Parbat, below Rakhiot Peak. An ice avalanche came down and killed every one of them: seven Germans, including the expedition's leader, and nine porters. It remains the worst single disaster ever to occur on an eight-thousand-metre peak. The leader was Karl Wien, thirty years old, a lecturer in geography at Munich, the only son of a Nobel laureate, and by the reckoning of the Himalayan Club one of the finest climbers Munich had ever produced.

A Physicist's Son

Wien was born in Würzburg on 10 September 1906, the only son of Wilhelm Wien, the distinguished physicist and Nobel Prize winner whose displacement law governs the relationship between a body's temperature and the wavelength at which it radiates most intensely.

Growing up in that household seems to have settled the essential question of Karl Wien's life early: he would go to the mountains, but he would go with instruments. He studied science and became a lecturer in the geography department of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. His research concerned glacier movement and stereo-photogrammetry — the technique of deriving accurate three-dimensional measurements from paired photographs taken from known positions.

Stereo-photogrammetry is the crucial detail. In the 1920s and 1930s it was transforming what an expedition could bring home. Before it, mapping a remote glacier system meant occupying survey stations on the ground, a slow business in terrain that frequently could not be occupied at all. With paired photographs, a climber who could reach a ridge with a camera could return with the raw material for a map. It converted mountaineering itself into a data-gathering method, and Wien was among the people who made that conversion work.

The Instrument and the Rope

His expedition record is a steady alternation between the two activities, often within a single journey.

In 1927 he took part in the German-Austrian Alpine Club's photogrammetric survey of the Zillertal Alps. In 1928 he joined W. R. Rickmers on the Alai-Pamir expedition to Central Asia. In the Alps, with Willo Welzenbach — the outstanding German ice climber of the era — he made the first ascent of the north face of the Grossglockner, a hard technical route that established him among the leading alpinists of his generation.

Kangchenjunga and the Zemu Map

In 1931 Wien joined Paul Bauer's expedition to Kangchenjunga, the third-highest mountain on earth and, on its Sikkim side, one of the most complicated glacier systems in the Himalaya. The attempt on the summit failed. The cartography did not: the expedition produced the first accurate map of the Zemu glacier.

This is the pattern of Wien's career in miniature. The peaks he was sent to climb often defeated him. The surveys he made on the way to them succeeded permanently, and are the part of the work that entered the scientific record.

In 1934 he surveyed the East African highlands with Karl Troll, the geographer who would become a major figure in the comparative study of mountain ecology. The pairing suggests how seriously Wien was taken as a scientist rather than merely as a climber with a camera.

Siniolchu

In 1936 Wien led an expedition to Sikkim and achieved the first ascents of Siniolchu and of the north peak of Simvu. Siniolchu is one of the most beautiful and technically severe peaks of the Kangchenjunga group, and the ascent — with Wien in charge rather than in support — made his reputation as a leader as well as a climber. It is the achievement on which his mountaineering standing properly rests.

Nanga Parbat

It also made him the obvious choice for what came next. Germany had been attempting Nanga Parbat through the 1930s, and the 1934 expedition had ended in death on the mountain. The Reichssportführer selected Wien to organise and lead a further attempt in 1937 — the first since those deaths.

The political context cannot be edited out. By 1937 German Himalayan climbing was a state-sponsored enterprise with the prestige of the regime attached to the outcome, and Wien's appointment came from a Nazi sporting official. Whatever his own convictions, the expedition he led was a national project before it was a scientific one.

Between 14 and 16 June 1937, Wien and fifteen others were at Camp 4 beneath Rakhiot Peak when the ice avalanche struck. There were no survivors among them.

Why Karl Is Called a Genius

The honest claim for Wien is narrow, and it is not a claim about summits. It concerns a specific and unusual intellectual combination: he was a trained scientist who understood that the emerging technique of stereo-photogrammetry could be married to high-altitude mountaineering, and he was a good enough climber to reach the positions from which the technique actually pays. Most photogrammetrists could not climb; most climbers could not reduce a photographic survey to a map. Wien did both, and the first accurate map of the Zemu glacier is the concrete result — a permanent scientific product extracted from an expedition that failed at its stated objective. Kenneth Mason of the Himalayan Club summarised him as a man with "three loves in life: his country, science, and high mountains," and his companions remembered him as "a loyal, reliable, and modest comrade, always ready with help in survey and research, as well as when climbing."

The counter-case is substantial and mostly a matter of arithmetic. Wien died at thirty. His published scientific output was necessarily slight, and he founded nothing; the photogrammetric methods he used were developed by others, and his contribution was skilled application rather than invention. He is remembered as an excellent practitioner, and remembered at all largely because of the manner of his death. Nothing in the sources consulted here records anyone calling him a genius; they called him one of the finest climbers Munich produced, which is praise of craft and character. And the final judgement is uncomfortable: he led sixteen men to a campsite beneath an ice slope on Nanga Parbat, and all of them died there. Leadership on that scale is judged by outcomes, and this outcome was catastrophic. Whether the site could reasonably have been known to be lethal is a question the mountain answered before anyone could ask it.

Legacy

The 1937 disaster ended a phase of German Himalayan climbing and stands as the benchmark against which every subsequent eight-thousand-metre tragedy is measured. Wien himself survives more quietly — in the Zemu glacier map, in the first ascent of Siniolchu, and in the demonstration that a mountaineering expedition could be made to yield real science rather than merely a flag on a summit. He was the son of a man who measured radiation with instruments, and he spent his short career carrying instruments to places nobody had been able to take them.
