This support marked a turning point for the artist, who had spent his formative school years in Bonn alongside classmates such as Ludwig van Beethoven.
Early Career and Education
Born in Bacharach in 1772, Karl von Kügelgen pursued his initial education at the University of Bonn. During his time in Bonn, he resided with his twin brother, Gerhard von Kügelgen, who also pursued a career as a history and portrait painter. His early professional development included periods in Frankfurt and Würzburg, where he worked within the studios of Johann Christoph Fesel. By 1796, he had relocated to Vienna, traveling in the company of the composer Andreas Romberg and his cousin, the cellist Bernhard Romberg, before eventually moving to Riga.

Kügelgen established a significant reputation as a landscape and history painter, eventually securing the position of court and cabinet painter in St. Petersburg by 1798. His formal recognition within the artistic hierarchy was cemented through his membership in the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. While his career centered on visual art activity, he also functioned as a dedicated draftsperson.
Personal Life and Death
In 1807, he married Emilie Zoege von Manteuffel, who was the sister of Helene, his twin brother Gerhard's wife. The couple had a son, Konstantin von Kügelgen, who followed his father's profession as a landscape painter. Karl von Kügelgen died in 1832 at Tõnismäe in Tallinn, having lived for some time in the Russian Empire. He was laid to rest at the Kopli cemetery. His legacy includes his descendants, such as his granddaughter, Sally von Kügelgen.
