A 1989 doctoral thesis concerning the perturbation of Hunt processes by signed additive functionals marked the start of Karl-Theodor Sturm’s academic trajectory. Born in 1960, the German mathematician has since established a significant research presence in stochastic analysis and the geometric interpretation of metric measure spaces through a career spanning over three decades at major European institutions.
Academic Foundations and Early Research
Sturm completed his Abitur at Platen-Gymnasium Ansbach in 1980 before enrolling at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. By 1986, he held a Diploma in Mathematics and a State Examination in Mathematics and Physics. Under the supervision of Heinz Bauer, he earned his PhD three years later.

His primary research contributions involve the application of geometric concepts to stochastic processes. Between 1993 and 1995, Sturm produced a series of papers titled Analysis on local Dirichlet spaces, where he adapted methods from elliptic regularity theory to address singular operators on abstract spaces. He later gained prominence for his investigations into synthetic Ricci bounds for metric measure spaces, a field developed alongside colleagues including John Lott and Cédric Villani.
Institutional Leadership and Recognition
Joining the faculty at the University of Bonn in 1997, Sturm has occupied several administrative roles, including managing director of the Institute for Applied Mathematics from 2007 to 2010. Since 2012, he has served as the coordinator of the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics. His work earned him a Heisenberg fellowship in 1994 and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2016. In 2022, he was elected to the Academia Europaea.
