After her debut in Animal House, Allen appeared in The Wanderers and A Small Circle of Friends in 1979 and 1980. She also performed as a guest star in the 1979 pilot of Knots Landing and secured a role in Manhattan. Her portrayal of a love interest in William Friedkin’s 1980 thriller Cruising furthered her presence in mainstream cinema.
Breakthrough and Major Roles
Allen reached critical success in 1981 as Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark, earning a Saturn Award for Best Actress. She continued with roles in films including Shoot the Moon, Starman—which garnered another Saturn Award nomination—and the 1988 comedy Scrooged. She reprised the role of Marion Ravenwood in the 2008 sequel and the 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Stage Work and Directing
Beyond cinema, Allen maintained a consistent commitment to the stage. She debuted on Broadway in 1982 with The Monday After the Miracle and performed in Extremities in 1983, winning the Theatre World Award for her work.
