Born in Veghel in 1938, Karel van Eerd grew up within a family involved in food wholesaling since the early 20th century. In 1984, Van Eerd acquired the Jumbo brand and its retail formula from Jan Meurs. At the time of this acquisition, the business consisted of only three supermarket locations. Under his direction, the company grew significantly over the following decades, utilizing a specific operational model that allowed for the scaling of the supermarket chain throughout the region.
Professional Legacy
Van Eerd served in various high-level capacities, transitioning from general manager to chairman of the supervisory board at Jumbo. Beyond his business interests, he also maintained a pursuit as a jazz pianist. He remained active in his commercial roles until the later stages of his life, witnessing the brand's expansion into Belgium before his death in Veghel on 14 December 2022 at the age of 84.
