Artistic Formation
Initial painting instruction occurred during Mařák's gymnasium years, preceding his formal registration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague between 1852 and 1853. Under the guidance of Max Haushofer, he began his technical foundation before continuing his studies in Munich under Leopold Rottmann and Eduard Schleich. This period established his orientation toward landscape subjects.

Following a period of travel across Bohemia from 1855 to 1858, Mařák established a base in Vienna. His work during this time expanded to include etching, private drawing tuition, and magazine illustration. Despite never visiting France, his compositions began incorporating aesthetic elements associated with the Barbizon school. His professional output also included travel sketches from the Balkans and the Tyrol.
Academic Influence and Later Commissions
In 1887, Josef Hlávka appointed Mařák to a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. His instruction led to the formation of the Mařák Landscape School, which included students such as Otakar Lebeda, Antonín Slavíček, František Kaván, and Alois Kalvoda. During these years, his commissions included decorative work for the National Theatre in Prague and the National Museum staircase. He additionally collaborated with Goupil & Cie on engravings of the four seasons and four times of day, executed by Eduard Willmann.
