Academic Formation
Józef Przytycki earned his Master of Science in mathematics from the University of Warsaw in 1977. He subsequently pursued doctoral studies at Columbia University, where he completed his PhD in 1981 under the supervision of Joan Birman. Following these credentials, he returned to Poland to accept an assistant professor position at the University of Warsaw.

Between 1986 and 1995, Przytycki pursued an expansive period of international scholarship, holding visiting positions at the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, Michigan State University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the University of California, Berkeley. Additional appointments included roles at Odense University and the University of California, Riverside. In 1995, he joined the faculty of George Washington University, reaching the rank of professor in 1999.
Contributions to Knot Theory
Przytycki’s scholarly output includes two books, 25 conference proceedings, and more than 100 research papers. His 1991 publication introduced the concept of skein modules, further advancing the field. He has demonstrated consistent leadership in academic outreach, co-organizing the Knots in Washington conference series every semester since 1995, alongside various international events such as Knots in Poland, Knots in Hellas, and the Advanced School and Conference on Knot Theory in Trieste.
