He led the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) from its formation in 1961. His activities frequently brought him into direct conflict with the ruling white minority government, leading to his detention.
Unity and Government Office
Following a turbulent period of internal military suppression in western Zimbabwe, Nkomo oversaw the merger of ZAPU with the Zimbabwe African National Union. This integration sought to stabilize the country, leading to his appointment as Second Vice President. His career spanned decades of change, ultimately concluding in Harare, where he died in 1999.
