Joshua Bell

Violin prodigy who soloed with the Philadelphia Orchestra at 14 and became one of America's most celebrated violinists.

Joshua David Bell began his formal training at age five after displaying an early affinity for music by plucking rubber bands stretched over dresser drawers. Since his professional debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 14, the Bloomington, Indiana native has established an extensive career as both a performer and music educator, working with many of the world's major ensembles.

Early Education and Professional Emergence

Born in 1967, Bell grew up in Bloomington where he studied under instructors including Donna Bricht, Mimi Zweig, and the influential pedagogue Josef Gingold. His academic journey included Bloomington High School North, where he graduated in 1984, followed by an Artist Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1989. His professional trajectory accelerated during his teenage years, culminating in a Carnegie Hall debut in 1985 at age 17 while appearing with the St. Louis Symphony.

Collaborative Performance and Orchestral Leadership

Beyond his solo work, Bell has engaged in diverse musical leadership roles. He served as an artistic partner for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from 2004 to 2007. In 2011, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields appointed him music director, a position he continues to hold following multiple contract extensions, including one through August 2028. Additionally, in October 2024, the New Jersey Symphony named him their principal guest conductor, with his tenure scheduled to commence in the 2025–2026 season.

The Gibson ex Huberman and Media Projects

Bell performs on the Gibson ex Huberman, a 1713 Stradivarius violin. He acquired the instrument in 2001 after selling his previous Tom Taylor Stradivarius. His career has often intersected with film and media; he provided solo violin work for the Oscar-winning soundtrack of The Red Violin and contributed to the scores of Angels & Demons and the documentary Chasing Ice. In 2007, he participated in a Washington Post project at a Washington, D.C. subway station, where he performed as an incognito busker to observe audience interaction in a non-concert setting.
