Josep Maria Bartomeu

Spanish entrepreneur, and a former president of FC Barcelona

Taking office on 23 January 2014, Josep Maria Bartomeu became the fortieth president of FC Barcelona following the resignation of his predecessor, Sandro Rosell. His tenure lasted until October 2020, encompassing a period marked by significant administrative shifts, extensive trophy acquisitions across multiple sports departments, and complex legal investigations involving the management of the club’s affairs.

Early Background and Professional Trajectory

Born in Barcelona in 1963, Bartomeu pursued his education at Aula Escola Europea and later attended ESADE Business School. Beyond his executive roles in sports, he has operated as an entrepreneur, merchant, and businessperson. He currently serves as a partner and CEO for the companies ADELTE and EFS, maintaining a career path that bridges the corporate sector with high-level sports administration.

Leadership at FC Barcelona

Bartomeu initially served as the head of the basketball section during the presidency of Joan Laporta. He later aligned with Sandro Rosell, serving as vice-president from July 2010 to January 2014 after their ticket secured 61.35% of the member vote. Upon assuming the presidency, he oversaw a vast array of athletic successes. During his leadership, the men's football team captured four La Liga titles and the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League, while the handball and roller hockey departments maintained dominant records in their respective domestic and European competitions.

Legal Challenges and Resignation

The latter half of his presidency faced substantial scrutiny. Bartomeu was investigated for alleged tax fraud related to the signing of Neymar, though reports indicated he would not stand trial following a successful appeal process. In 2021, authorities initiated an investigation into the so-called Barçagate, an alleged defamation campaign involving I3 Ventures, which purportedly aimed to protect the club's image while criticizing certain players. Following these pressures and internal friction, Bartomeu and his board of directors announced their collective resignation on 27 October 2020.
