Jos Verstappen

Two senior European Karting Championships in 1989 signaled the arrival of Jos Verstappen, a Dutch driver who transitioned from junior formulae to the elite tier of global motorsport. Between 1994 and 2003, he competed in Formula One, navigating the technical challenges of the sport’s most demanding series while representing multiple teams and establishing a long-term presence in professional racing.

Early Development and Junior Formulae

Born in 1972 in Montfort, Verstappen began competitive karting at age eight. By 1984, he attained the title of Dutch junior champion. His performance in the 1989 European Championships marked a significant milestone before he moved into car racing in 1991. Driving in Formula Opel Lotus, he secured the 1992 Benelux Championship and the EFDA Nations Cup. His trajectory continued in 1993, when he won both the Masters of Formula 3 and the German Formula 3 championship as a rookie.

Formula One Entry and Benetton Tenure

Verstappen entered Formula One in 1994 as a test driver for Benetton, quickly securing a race seat following an injury to JJ Lehto. His debut occurred at the Brazilian Grand Prix. During the 1994 season, he achieved two podium finishes, becoming the first Dutch driver to accomplish this feat in Hungary. A notable technical incident occurred at the German Grand Prix, where a fuel leak during a pit stop engulfed his car in flames, leading to subsequent safety modifications in fuel delivery systems across the sport.

Mid-Career Transitions and Endurance Racing

Following his initial tenure at Benetton, Verstappen competed for Simtek, Footwork, Tyrrell, Stewart, and Arrows, before concluding his Formula One career with Minardi in 2003. He shifted focus to other categories thereafter, competing in the A1 Grand Prix series for the Netherlands and securing a victory in South Africa. In 2008, he moved into sportscar racing, achieving success in the LMP2 class by winning both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Le Mans Series with Van Merksteijn.

Coaching and Recent Competitions

Since 2002, Verstappen has managed the career of his son, Max Verstappen, who has secured four Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles. Beyond management, he has continued his own racing career in various disciplines. He contested the 2022 Ypres Rally as an independent entrant and has participated in the European Rally Championship since 2025.
